Multicultural Concerns in Psychotherapy, III

Course Description:
The fourth force in psychology, multiculturalism, has now taken its place along side the traditional dynamic, cognitive-behavioral and humanistic psychologies. This eight-month study group will read leading papers by the major authorities in this rapidly expanding field: Derald Wing Sue, Allan Ivey, Paul Petersen, Alan Roland, Charles Ridley, Coronel West, Nancy Boyd-Franklin, Geert Hofstede, Neil Altman, Rose Marie Pérez Foster, and Sumie Okazaki [papers and assignments will be provided upon registration]. In addition, three novels written by bi-cultural authors depicting how real people struggle with clashes of values, intergenerational internalizations, and multiple identities will be studied and discussed:
Learning Goals:
Ø To learn how multiculturalism is the fourth major force in psychology.
Ø To understand the major concerns of a multicultural approach to psychotherapy.
Ø To learn from reading and discussion how multicultural issues affect psychotherapy practice.
General Information:
This course will be taught in a small group format with several key papers and chapters assigned each month for reading and discussion. The course will be limited to ten participants and will meet the First Thursdays from 11:00 to 12:30 p.m. Tuition for the year (for 12 hours of continuing education credit) is $320 including the non-refundable $80 registration fee with the balance to be paid in three monthly installments of $80.
The Listening Perspectives Study Center is accredited to provide Continuing Education Credits for Psychologists, Marriage and Family Therapists, Social Workers, and Nurses. The exact number of credits awarded is equal to the number of contact hours for each event and is specified on the Registration Form.
