Relational Psychotherapy, VII
Instructor: Lawrence E. Hedges, Ph.D.
Course Description:
The past two decades have seen the emergence of a tradition in psychotherapy focusing on relationship as it emerges in the transference-countertransference matrix. The roots of this tradition stretch back to Ferenczi, Reich, Balint, Fairbairn, Sullivan, Winnicott, and Kohut. But new concepts including subjectivity and inter-subjectivity in the therapeutic engagement; symmetry, mutuality and co-construction in the therapeutic relationship; recognition and negation in development and relationship; co-participation in the creation of a transference-countertransference matrix; and other relational concepts as developed by leading theorists and master clinicians will be studied in this year-long reading and discussion course.
Learning Goals:
Ø To learn the key concepts of relational psychotherapy.
Ø To learn the relational theories and practices of master relational therapists.
Ø To learn from discussions with the instructor and colleagues how to apply the theories of relational psychotherapy to dilemmas in your practice.
